Fifteen Minutes to Clear My Head

Fifteen Minutes to Clear My Head Monday morning in the Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity House. I woke up and went through my normal morning routine: showering, packing my bag, and having breakfast. As usual, I missed the Boston Daytime shuttle to campus. Like any other morning, it looked like I was walking to campus. But as I stepped out onto the front steps, I felt compelled to pull out my phone and take a picture. I had just taken a snapshot of something I see every single morning. I stepped onto the sidewalk and took another picture of the street. As I walked to the bridge, I took another picture. People had already begun to give me looks as if it was weird that I was taking pictures of everyday things. But I thought these everyday things were beautiful, and even though I see them every morning, I felt compelled to take pictures of them to show everyone. For those of you that dont know, MIT is in Cambridge and Boston is across the Charles River. Connecting the two is the Harvard Bridge. Many MIT students live in Boston, whether in a fraternity, sorority, an independent living group, or in their own apartment, and as such have to cross the bridge every day to get to campus. A lot of students dislike the idea of having to cross the bridge every morning and night, especially when there are dorms on MIT campus that are literally feet from the academic buildings. I felt this way too before coming to MIT, as I didnt want to waste my time just commuting to class. But after moving into my fraternity house at the beginning of this semester, Ive grown to love my fifteen minute walk to class. Fifteen minutes to clear my head and wake up enough ready to tackle the day. Its almost therapeutic, getting a good stretch with a great view. And being far from campus forces me to plan ahead rather than fall into a bad habit of waking up five minutes bef ore class starts and frantically rushing there. This is my morning walk from my fraternity house to MIT campus, and although Ive walked it nearly a hundred times, its still breathtaking: On the front steps of our frat house. Ok, not breathtaking yet, but itll get there. I promise. On the bridge at approximately 170 smoots. At MIT campus Approaching Lobby 7 In front of Lobby 7 Inside Lobby 7 Walking down the Infinite Corridor In front of the Stata Center, where my first class of the day is. Inside the Stata Center Down the steps to my classroom Made it to my first class of the day, 8.02, and today learned through experiment about polarizing radio waves and microwaves. Thats my morning walk. Maybe one day Ill post what my late nights are like, but they mostly consist of psetting until 3am.

The Cartesian Circle is Wrong - 1586 Words

Rene Descartes meditations on the existence of God are very profound, thought-provoking, and engaging. From the meditations focused specifically on the existence of God, Descartes uses the argument that based on his clear and distinct perception that cannot be treated with doubt, God does exist. In the beginning of the third meditation, Descartes proclaims that he is certain he is a thinking thing based on his clear and distinct perception, and he couldn’t be certain unless all clear and distinct perceptions are true. Before diving into the existence of God, Descartes introduces smaller arguments to prove the existence of God. For example, Descartes introduces in his argument that there are ideas in which he possess that exists outside of†¦show more content†¦The reason we cannot doubt the existence of God is because of clear and distinct perceptions that God exist. To conclude, because of clear and distinct perception, Descartes conveys that God exists. Though his argument seems intriguing, Descartes argument has been treated with dubious standpoints. The reason of doubt, better known as the Cartesian circle, argues that Descartes goes against his own word. The foundation of the Cartesian Circle consists of the argument that Descartes can only know that God exists and is not a deceiver if he knows that his clear and distinct perceptions are true. But he can only know that his clear and distinct perceptions are true only if he knows that God exists and is not a deceiver. This circularity comes from the basic fact that one hand believers of this circularity cites that Descartes states that we must rely on clear and distinct perceptions in order to prove that God exists; however, on the other hand, believers also proclaim that Descartes convey God must exist in order for him to develop the clear and distinct perceptions that he exists and is not a deceiver. Now that both sides have been introduced, the focus of this paper is to speak o n Descartes meditations about the existence of God, and the Cartesian circle. The standpoint I will be taking is to prove that the Cartesian circle has overemphasized the claim that Descartes is using circularity, and that this claim should be disregarded. Consumerism Essay Free Essays

Taking the green to the extreme A lot of consumer groups are starting to show up against capitalism and consumerism. They strive to come out with the message that â€Å"less is more†, meaning that buying less is better for the environment. They are taking recycling to another level. We will write a custom essay sample on Consumerism Essay or any similar topic only for you Order Now The question is, is it possible to make a huge impact? Do we really need to stop consuming to make a difference? And how bad do we need a change? One of these groups are called freegans. Freegans are people living an anti-consumer lifestyle, they choose to re-use food that is being tossed to the curbside but the food being tossed is edible. A lot of people think that it is obscene to eat food out of a dumpster or curbside and that it is impossible to know how long the food has been out there. They are not necessarily being freegans out of economical issues they are doing it out of principle because they do not wish to fund those big corporations that are spoiling the environment and they also think about the homeless people and give them some of the food they find since they get so much that they cannot take it all home. Their message is being well received, since some stores put the food in way that makes it easy for them to pick and choose and they even wink at them. Another group is the Compact that are against consumerism. It originated in 2005 at dinner party in San Francisco, where the guests decided to take recycling to another level by going a whole year without making a new purchase but they are allowed to buy used items and are encouraged to borrow and reuse whatever possible. They too think that consumerism is destroying the world and that most of us own more than we need. Their concept is being taken rather seriously and has quickly been spread all across the United States of America. Almost 3. 00 people from all over the world has taken part of the concept on Yahoo and the participants think that it has been a rewarding experience. Quote from John Perry the co-founder of the Compact group – â€Å"We’ve enjoyed the camaraderie and competitive spirit with friends,â€Å" Perry said. â€Å"And it’s been really good for us to think about what we need, as opposed to what we want† When Colin Beavan got the news a bout global warming and he did not feel that the government was doing something about it, so he decided to do something about it, therfore he did something that nobody has done in thousands of years. Colin Beavan decided to live without electricity through a whole year with his daughter and wife. Other initiatives are to use low-energy transportation, eliminating trash, eating locally and seasonal and so on He wrote a book called â€Å"No Impact Man: A Year Off the Grid† based on his experiences throughout the year he was living without electricity. Colin Beavan says that whenever they were bored they went to the park and hung out with their neighbors and in this way they were both being social and sparing the environment. Colin Beavan has encouraged people to do the same by starting the No Impact Experiment. There is a webpage were you can register yourself to join the No Impact Experiment, you can schedule how you are going to live a week and upload videos of how well you are doing, so that everyone can see your results. Personally I think that these are some amazing initiatives and it is very inspiring but I do not think I would be able to live by eating food from the dumpsters or without electricity, I am too accustom to the way I am living like right now and I believe a lot people would have difficulties because they are to accustom to the way they are, I know a lot of people who cannot live without their cell phones or being on Facebook. A lot of the things that a couple years ago we almost did not use have become a necessity for us, e. g. internet, or at least for my generation. I do think that even the smallest thing you do, can help the environment and the small steps are the ones that are going to help the environment. ? How to cite Consumerism Essay, Essay examples

Recommendations for Ensuring Food Safety Reducing Disease

Food Safety Unsafe food causes many severe and enduring ailments, ranging from stomach upsets to diarrhoeal conditions to diverse forms of cancer. According to statistics released by World Health Organization (WHO), food-borne and water-borne diarrhoeal conditions cause the deaths of an estimated 2.2 million people every twelve months, 1.9 million being children (para. 1).Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Recommendations for Ensuring Food Safety Reducing Disease-Causing Mosquitoes specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Consequently, food-borne ailments and unsafe food represent a rising public health challenge and efforts must be made towards the development and implementation of programmes aimed at improving food safety at the community level. Restaurants have been singled out as a major source of unsafe foods largely due to unhealthy food handling, preparation, and storage standards (Rees Watson 27). In the case sce nario, a mandatory food safety training requirement for all employees should be initiated to counter the problem of dirty restaurants, which enhances threats to food safety. This recommendation is anchored on the rationale that staff workers to a large extent contribute to the health violations associated with unsafe food. A review conducted recently on restaurant food safety practices demonstrated â€Å"†¦that a typical kitchen worker cross-contaminates food with potentially dangerous pathogens about once per hour† (Norfleet para. 1). The review found that restaurant workers use aprons and other dirty clothing to dry their hands, as well as making use of the same utensils, gadgets, and surfaces to prepare both uncooked and cooked meals. As such, the focus should be to introduce mandatory employee training especially in areas of food safety to guarantee that appropriate practices in hygiene, food handling and preparation, and sanitation are put in place in every restaura nt operating in the community. As already mentioned, work behaviours may either promote or compromise food safety. The use of aprons and other dirty clothing to dry hands, non-washing of hands with clean water and soap, using the same services to prepare uncooked and cooked food, and non-observance of kitchen hygiene may compromise food safety (Norfleet para. 5). However, strict observance of hygiene and sanitation practices, including washing of hands, preparation of food in safe places, and using clean utensils, is bound to promote food safety in the restaurants. Vectors Vectors can be described as â€Å"†¦the transmitters of disease-causing organisms that carry the pathogens from one host to another† (Artsob para. 1), and research reveals that there has been a comeback of vector-borne conditions since the 1970s including the Rift Valley Fever, plague, sleeping sickness, highland malaria, and the West Nile encephalitis.Advertising Looking for essay on health medi cine? Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More From the case scenario, there has been an increase in reported cases of encephalitis and a few deaths related to the West Nile Virus as a direct consequence of increased mosquito bites. To prevent bites by mosquitoes that may transmit West Nile Virus, it is highly recommended that people establish physical barriers by using house screens, bed nets, appropriate clothing, and insect repellents (Artsob para. 6). Many of the disease-causing mosquitoes bite their victims at night and, as such, it is imperative to put physical barriers and wear appropriate clothing during daytime to reduce the risks of infection though bites. To control the mosquito population in the community, environmental modification geared towards the elimination of specific breeding areas should be recommended. The modification should include draining stagnant water, clearing vegetation close to houses, and using chemical contr ol measures to destroy the larvae or adult vectors (Artsob para. 6). Such a recommendation will go a long way to destabilize the mosquito’s breeding patterns, thus reduce their population in the community. Works Cited Artsob, H. Vector-borne Diseases. Capital punishment misc15 essays

Capital punishment misc15 essays Crime is inevitably one of the biggest problems that faces the modern world today. It can be found all over the world, whether in large cities or small villages. Over time, society has tried to find ways to deal with crime. Such methods include community service, paying a fine serving some time in prison, and in the case of more serious crimes, the death penalty. This is the case in some states in the U.S. where persons have been executed for aggravated assault, rape, kidnapping, armed robbery, sabotage and espionage. Advocates for capital punishment feel that it deters criminals from committing crime and that if the criminal is not executed, the risk later extends to the community as such persons may escape or be pardoned or paroled. Although believers in the death penalty feel that it deters people from committing violent crime and is a variable solution for protecting society , capital punishment is immoral, it cannot be proved to be a deterrent, it violates the principle of doubl e effect, it is often applied with inequities, is condemned by the Church as heresy, and should be eradicated. Before an actual argument in favour of the eradication of the death penalty it is important to define what capital punishment actually is. Capital punishment is the execution of a criminal under death sentence imposed by competent public authority. It is derived from the Roman word, "caput", meaning the head, the life or the civil rights of an individual. Unlike the revenge of a single person, this penalty is a manifestation of the communities will to vindicate its laws and systems of justice. The death penalty was used in ancient times as well. The earliest historical records contain evidence of capital punishment. It was mentioned in the Code of Hammurabi, a collection of laws and edicts by Babylonian king Hammurabi that date from the first half of the 18th century BC. The Bible prescribed death as the penalty for more than 30 different crimes...

The Iron Heel Study Guide

The Iron Heel Study Guide The Iron Heel  is an early dystopian novel published in 1908 by Jack London. London is best known for his man-against-nature novels like  The Call of the Wild  and  White Fang, so  The Iron Heel  is often  considered a departure from his usual output.   The Iron Heel  is written from the first-person perspective of a female protagonist, and  it includes a  presentation of London’s socialist political ideals, both of which were unusual for its time. The book addresses Londons belief that unionized labor and socialist political movements would rise to challenge the traditional capitalist power base. Later writers such as George Orwell often explicitly mention The Iron Heel as an influence on their own works. Plot The novel begins with a foreword written by Anthony Meredith in the 419 BOM (Brotherhood of Man), approximately the 27th century. Meredith discusses the Everhard Manuscript as a historical document, composed by Avis Everhard and describing the events of 1912 through 1932. Meredith warns that the manuscript is riddled with errors of fact, but insists on its value as a firsthand account of those â€Å"terrible times.† Meredith notes that the manuscript, written by Avis Everhard, cannot be considered objective because she is writing about her own husband and was herself too close to the events to have objectivity. In the Everhard Manuscript proper, Avis describes meeting her future husband, socialist activist Ernest Everhard. She finds him poorly groomed, self-righteous, and irritating. Ernest argues that the American system of economics is based on the abuse and poor treatment (in other words, the exploitation) of labor, and that the ordinary workers who keep everything going suffer terribly. Avis initially does not agree, but later she conducts her own investigation of Ernest’s claims and is shocked to discover she   concurs with his assessment. As Avis becomes close to Ernest, her father and a family friend (Dr. John Cunningham and Bishop Moorehouse) also begin to agree with his ideas. All four key characters begin to work for the socialist causes. As a result, the oligarchs who own and run the country under the guise of capitalism and democracy move to ruin them all. Dr. Cunningham loses his teaching job and his home. Bishop Moorehouse is found to be clinically insane and is committed to an asylum. Ernest wins election as a Representative in Congress, but is framed as a conspirator in a terrorist plot and is sent to prison, along with Avis. Avis is released some months later, followed by Ernest. The two flee into hiding and begin plotting a revolution. Before action can be taken, the government and oligarchs- which Ernest collectively calls The Iron Heel- form a private army, legitimized by the weak government. This private army sets in motion a false-flag riot in Chicago. The private army, called the Mercenaries, violently crushes the riot, killing many and using brutal tactics. Bishop Moorehouse, escaped from captivity, is killed in the riot. At the end of the novel, Avis writes optimistically about the plans for a second uprising that Ernest is certain will succeed. However, as the reader knows from Meredith’s forward, this second uprising will fail, and The Iron Heel will rule the country for centuries until the final revolution that forms the Brotherhood of Man. The manuscript ends suddenly, and Meredith explains that Avis Everhard hid the book because she knew she was about to be arrested. Major Characters Anthony Meredith. A historian from the far future, reading and making notes on the so-called Everhard Manuscript. He is condescending and chauvinistic towards Avis and often corrects her; however, his remarks reveal his limited understanding of the early 20th  century era that he studies. The reader  gets to know Meredith mainly through his marginalia, which adds detail and context to the novel. Avis Everhard. Born  into wealth, Avis is initially dismissive of the plight of the working class. Over the course of her manuscript, however, she begins to see her younger self as naive and childish, and she becomes a fierce proponent of revolution. There is evidence that Avis is not entirely reliable and that her core attitudes have not entirely changed; she often uses disrespectful language to describe the working classes even as she is speaking the language of revolution. Ernest Everhard. A passionate believer in socialism, Ernest is shown to be intelligent, physically powerful, and a courageous public speaker. Meredith implies that Ernest Everhard was merely one of many key people in the early days of the revolution, suggesting that Avis may  be romanticizing Ernest throughout her manuscript. Most critics believe Ernest represents London himself and his core beliefs. Dr. John Cunningham. Avis’ father, a celebrated academic and scientist. He is initially a supporter of the status quo, but slowly becomes convinced of  Ernest’s cause. He loses his status in society as a result and later disappears; Avis suspects he is kidnapped by the government. Bishop Moorehouse. A minister who undergoes a similar change in views  as Dr. Cunningham, eventually giving his life in the effort to resist the oligarchy. Literary Style The Iron Heel is a work of dystopian fiction. Dystopian fiction  presents a universe that is at odds with the author’s beliefs and attitudes; in this case, the dystopian aspect comes from a world run by capitalist oligarchs who exploit the working class, abuse the poor, and ruthlessly destroy critics. The novel is also considered a work of soft science fiction, because although it makes no mention of advanced technology, it is centered around a setting 700 years ahead of the date of its composition. London used a series of nested points-of-view in the novel, each with a different degree of  reliability. On the surface is the frame story of Dr. Meredith, who writes from the future and examines a work of historical importance. He presents himself as a trusted authority, but some of his commentary includes factual errors about 20th century history that would be obvious to the reader, which undermines his reliability. The next point of view is that of Avis Everhard, the narrator of the manuscript that makes up the bulk of the text of the novel. Her reliability comes into question when she implies that her statements about her husband are subjective, as well as when she makes seemingly contemptuous comments about the political cause she professes to support. Finally, the perspective of Ernest Everhard is provided when his speeches are included in the text. These speeches seem reliable due to their word-for-word nature, but Avis unreliability makes the reader less certain.   London also employs a technique known as a false document: a  fictional work that is presented to the reader as a factual one. This conceit allows London to add complexity to a novel that might otherwise be a straightforward political tract.  The Iron Heel  contains two intertwined, multilayered false documents  (Avis’ manuscript and Meredith’s gloss on that manuscript). This combination a complex mystery concerning whose perspective is closest to the truth. Jack London was charged several times over the course of his career with plagiarism. Chapter 7 of The Iron Heel, The Bishop’s Vision, is an essay written by Frank Harris. London did not deny that he  copied the speech verbatim, but he claimed that he believed it was a speech delivered by an actual bishop. Affects of Poor Nutrition on Childrens Behavior Research Paper

Affects of Poor Nutrition on Childrens Behavior - Research Paper Example In 2003, Africa had an estimated 200 million children and adults that were under nourished according to the Food and Agricultural Organization of United Nations (The State of Food Insecurity in the World, 2003). Malnutrition is the reason for 55% deaths of children under 5 years of age globally. Out of 2.9 million deaths annually in Africa, approximately 0.1 million were as a result of malnourishment (Benson & Shekar). Several statistics are available that show the severity of poor nourishment and to what extent is it prevalent in the world today. According to UNICEF, millions of people Worldwide suffer from varying degrees of brain damages and stunted growth due to different deficiencies. In Sub-Saharan Africa, every third child is underweight and about 20% are found to be stunted (Bekele, 1998). According to research, proper nutrition is a major determinant of a child’s growth starting from as early as the intrauterine period; when the child is in the womb of the mother. Therefore, proper intake of nutrients begins before birth with the mother who bears the child. It is essential for the mother to take a nutritionally balanced diet which has a direct impact on the child’s growth and development. Absence of proper nutrition intake during pregnancy can have a permanent and irreversible impact on the child. Therefore, breast- feeding determines a major chunk of child’s cognitive and other development per se. If the mother herself does not take a healthy diet, it is going to effect the child’s growth negatively. Iron being an important part of brain tissue determines the speed of nerve impulses; which means deficiency of iron in the infancy period is likely to cause permanent damage to brain cells. This results in poor motor skills and abnormalities in behavior. It is also noticed that poorly nourished children find it hard to fight diseases or infections and so they are often found in poor health and

To what extent does the protective trade policy of the USA influence Essay

To what extent does the protective trade policy of the USA influence the Chinese economy - Essay Example United States of America (USA) has come out clearly in opposition to the kind of trading done by China. USA blames China for being business minded at the cost of the relations that exist between China and foreign investors. After USA and China re-established diplomatic relations in early 1979, trading between these two nations advanced greatly. China rose to the rank of being an imperative business partner of USA. However, with time, US imports from China rose to a higher level than the exports to that country. This resulted in the need for USA to formulate policies that would reduce consumption of products from China. For example, since the year 2004, USA banned poultry products from China. There are regulatory measures that are taken to limit trade within a nation when that nation is considered a threat to the balance of trade between the two nations. To benefit their citizens in a trade venture, some countries protect their markets against foreigners. This is an evaluation of the causes and effects of protectionism of trade by US on Chinese economy and possible remedies for restoring trade relations. Protectionism: This is an illegitimate way by which politicians use to shut down imports into a country on account of worsened domestic economic condition. This is aimed at improving benefits to local citizens and reduces spending on imports. Through this a country targets to spend less on imports than on exports (Chen, 2010, p170). Trade policies: These are regulations that are implemented by a nation to regulate trade relations with its partners. Through these regulations, a country is able to balance its spending on imports and exports. This fosters growth of a nation through time. Some trade policies are unjustifiable and are put in place to sideline potential competitors within a field of market (Gomory and Baumol, 2011, 689). Free trade: This is the creation of unrestricted exchanges of goods and services

Literature Review of Research Aims and Objectives

Literature Review of Research Aims and Objectives Organizational change is a broad term which can be explained by both content and process. For better understanding of this term both of its components should be considered. Both process and content can be independent or dependent, it depends upon the nature of change and scenario of change .Most of the researches focus on only one component. To understand organizational change a better understanding of organizational approach is necessary which is employed to bring about change. Following is a literature review of some articles, cases and research papers related to organizational change; David Chaudron. (2003). Assessing and improving your organization, It states that to assess whether an organization really need organizational change or not, an organization need to undergo four stages. These of four stages are, get started, assess problem and identify cause, choose treatment and periodically evaluate. For bringing successful change it is very important to identify problem and solutions to that problem. In my research this article would help me because it would tell me how organizations come to know that they really need change and how this process of change is started and carried on. I would be better able to write on organizational change if I am aware of starting point of change. William P. Barnett. (1995). Modeling internal organization change, William talks about two theories of change. Adaptational and selectional mechanism of organizational change. Adaptional model states that Change occurs mainly through adaptive response of individual firms to prior change in technology, environment or whatever. He also talks about internal and external factors responsible for change. Organizations with this type of approach are more innovative and discovery driven. To save them self from being obsolete and outworn such organizations have a close eye on environment and successful environment scanning leads them to successful change. Second approach says organizations cannot change easily. Whenever they do change greater risks are entitled. This approach talks about resistance to change and hesitation of top management in bringing about change. Organizations following this approach are more conservative and do not anticipate change. Effort to bring change is only made wh en it is necessary to survive. For instance, technology change in market makes such organizations to change existing technology to remain competitive. Internal factors such as culture, organization politics force an organization to change while internal factors like competitors, suppliers and customers and legislation make an organization to change. These variables are very important for me because it would help me to base my research on these factors. These factors would guide me to understand type of change and factors involved in change. Booz, Allen, Hamilton. (2004). Overall approach to change management, It creates relation between logical and emotional approach to change, change team and change ladder. Integrating logical and emotional approach means that focus should not be only on process and structure of change, people factor should also be considered. For instance, in changing technology, if technological and structural aspect is considered only and behaviors of people are overlooked then it is very difficult to bring about this technological change. For better and successful change process task/system and people/teams both should be kept in mind. To minimize resistant to change, people should be convinced and shown incentives in upcoming change so that they could propose change for personal benefit that would lead to organizational benefit in long run. It also says that the team which is communicating change should be credible. Once top management has decided to bring change, now its up to change team that ho w affectively they communicate the positive change message to every stake holder of organization. Change ladder part of article talks about communicating change around the organization from top management to lower staff. The higher the ladder of change, the more chances of successful change are created. Jonathan Becker, Roy Gill, Susan Moy, Veena Seshasdri. (1989). Managing change. T his case study addresses different problems and difficulties in implementing change. It also gives recommendation that how to overcome resistance to change. This is more helpful for a student of change management because with theoretical knowledge it is also giving hint about practical knowledge. It says about a medical center which had to face many challenges when they decided to change processes and facilities but with great courage and decision making like training and better communication network helped them to implement change successfully. Henry Mint Berg, Francs Wesley. (1992). cycles of organization change, authors talk about two types of organization changes; change in state and change in direction. Change in state is concerned with culture, structure, system and people. While change in direction is concerned with vision, position, programs, facilities. It also talks about inductive and deductive changes. Change process starts with inductive change and then it reaches to deductive change. In inductive we need to change our vision, mission and goals while when it leads us to deductive changes it needs the change of organization like culture, system and people behavior and power hierarchy. This research paper also talks about different stages in life of an organization that lead an organization to stage of revolution. According to comprehensiveness model of change discussed in this research paper, Change starts as an incremental process like adding value to some process or product/service but it reaches to different s tages of comprehensiveness like incremental to isolate, isolated to focused, focused to piecemeal, in the end it becomes revolutionarily .The sequence of stages is as follow; stage of stability, stage of adaptation, stage of struggle and stage of revolution. This article has specific relevance with my research topic because it deals with all stages related to change in organizational life. To understand complete change process all stages need to be understood. J.T.Hage. (1999). organizational innovation and organizational change, It differentiates innovation from change. According to writer, innovation is an isolated process. It neither has long lasting impact on organization nor does change organization as a whole. It is like innovating a process or product. For innovation, you have to focus on single innovation but set of innovations lead to change when innovation is not centered upon a single process but centered upon organization as a whole. Most of the research students confuse innovation with change and use both terms interchangeably. In my research, this article is a good piece of information that helps to differentiate two most important concepts in change management topic. Craig Eric Schneier. (1994). The training and development source book, in which writer talks about organizational change and members behavior change. According to write the first step towards change is to develop appositive perception about change among all members of organization. One chapter of this book talks about organizational life cycle stages which are; setup, survival and change. Organization starts with Entrepreneurial stage and reaches to decline then reengineering stage starts it includes continuous improvement and involving employees to ensure change. This book also talks about different agents involved in change and reengineering, as mature organizations need to involve both internal and external agents both because internal agents like employees endorse change while external agents like customers perceive change. This chapter of source book is very important for me in this research because it talks about agents in change thats why this part of literature is very consis tent with my topic. Curtis M. Grimm, Ken J. Smith. ( 1991). Research notes and communication management and organizational change this article talks about characteristics of management that what type of managerial expertise can lead to successful change and ensure acceptance of change by all the agents involved in change process. Attributes included in this research were education, experience in related field and age. Results showed that managers who succeeded to bring change are young and dynamic since they are young their industry experience is less but still they are very successful in bringing about change. In education those managers with MBA degree are more likely to bring change in organization. This type of research paper is very much relevant to my topic because it assist me to understand relation between change and managerial characteristics and attitudes, it also help me to understand multi dimension field of change management. John Holt. (1989). Managing change in extension, explains some forces of change what make an organization to change. These forces include perspective, niche, competition, people and program. These forces can be elaborated as perspective of an organization can be the market leader in low cost products for that they may need to change organizations processes and work system. To create a niche for a new product they may need to change approach like from mass customization they may opt for full customization. For this very reason organization would need to change complete approach and perspective to cater a specific niche for their product. Because capitalizing on tomorrows niches will require system-wide cooperation, from university presidents to county agents. A shared sense of mission and a renewed sense of its importance are vital in improving teamwork, especially as diverse as these team members are. The competition is fierce and increasing for all our niches. That is as it should b e: education, that long term national treasure, is far too important to be left in the hands of a monopoly. Monopoly there is not; competition for extension education markets abounds. In commercial agriculture, there are consultants of all stripes; universities such as Harvard and Stan- ford conduct agribusiness seminars; input companies are entering management consulting by dangling the carrot of financing well- planned operations. Dr.Kathleen K. Reardon, Dr. Kevin J. Reardon, Dr. Alan J. Rowe. (1998). Leadership styles for the five stages of radical change. It talks about leadership style and change. Top level leadership is most important agent in organization change. This article explains different type of organizational leadership and results in enforcing change. These types are commanding, logical, inspirational and supportive. Commanding leader is directing and focuses on results thus this type of leaders brings changes rapidly. Logical leaders are innovative and they are very careful about change. They have a thoughtful process before undertaking any change. Inspirational leaders focus on opportunities so change is radical there is no guarantee for change. Supportive leaders are those who facilitate work and involve others thats why they are very slow in bringing about change. This article also talks about change phases and leadership style needed for each phase. Planning phase require logical while launc hing phase require commanding leadership. This article is very relevant to my topic because it talks about most important agent in change that is leader. Aims and objectives of Research: The research seeks to determine: description of variables explanation of relationship between different variables and factors broadening the knowledge of field evaluation and diagnosis of problem statement solution to problem

Job Rotation

Job rotation is the surest way of keeping the employee away from complacency and boredom of routine. It is difficult for an employee to sustain his interest in a given Job for any substantial length of time as humans have the tendency of outgrowing their jobs through the learning and experience that they gain over a period of time. Stimulating human mind through diversity of challenges is a sure way to bring to forefront its creative instincts and in taking the individual and organizational performance to a higher plane. This is where Job rotation can prove to be a handy tool. Job rotation involves the movement of employees through a range of jobs in order to increase interest and motivation. It can also be described as an approach to Management Development where an individual is moved through a schedule of assignments designed to give him/her a breadth of exposure to the entire operation. Job rotation can improve â€Å"multi-skilling† but also involves the need for greater tra ining. In a sense, Job rotation is similar to Job enlargement. This approach widens the activities of a worker by switching him or her around a range of work. For example, an administrative employee might spend part of the week looking after the reception area of a business, dealing with customers and enquiries. Some time might then be spent manning the company telephone switchboard and then inputting data onto a database. Job rotation may offer the advantage of making it easier to cover for absent colleagues, but it may also reduce' productivity as workers are initially unfamiliar with a new task.Job rotation is also practiced to allow qualified employees to gain more insights into the processes of a company, and to reduce boredom and increase job satisfaction through job variation. POTENTIAL OF JOB ROTATION A well planned Job rotation programme in an organization has immense potential of positive impact on job satisfaction/motivation, engagement and finally on retention of employee s. Few of the outcomes of job rotation with respect to the individual are: †¢ †¢ †¢ †¢Job enrichment Overall development Intrinsic motivation to perform caused by newer challenges Career development BENEFITS OF JOB ROTATION For an organization, the benefits could include some or all of the following: †¢ †¢ †¢ †¢ Leadership development Aligning competencies with organizational requirements Lower attrition rates Performance improvement driven by unique view points of new people THE PRACTICE OF JOB ROTATION Today, in the industry, Job rotation is viewed â€Å"as just another transfer† rather than as an important tool for implementing HR strategy of the company.Job rotation has become a ritual at best, without any focus on the outcomes that can be achieved through a little planning and implementation effort. Today, Job rotation is a means of punishing poor performers, settling scores arising from organizational politics, or going through pe rcentage rotation scheme, where a certain percentage of employees in a certain area are shifted to pre-designated areas every year. REALIZING THE POTENTIAL OF JOB ROTATION In order to realize the true potential of Job rotation, there must be a planned system in place with the policy taking into account, †¢ †¢ †¢ †¢ †¢Organizational interest – employee commitment, attrition rates, specific business issues etc. Eligibility of the employees – qualification, prior experience, aptitude, attitude etc. Nature – mandatory or voluntary Duration Basis of selection etc. In the absence of aspects brought out above, there is every possibility that the seriousness with which Job rotation scheme is implemented in the company may get diluted and become a cause of sagging employee motivation.JOB ROTATIONS AT DIFFERENT LEVELS OF MANAGEMENT At the senior management levels, job rotation – frequently referred to as Management rotation, is tightly link ed with Succession Planning – developing a pool of people capable of stepping into an existing job. Here the goal is to provide learning experiences which facilitate changes in thinking and perspective equivalent to the â€Å"horizon† of the level of the succession planning. For job rotations at this level, it is absolutely necessary that the business problems in various areas are identified. This calls for the active involvement of top management to select most suitable people to be shifted rom their current jobs to tackle the challenges at hand by considering individual attributes already described above. This will not only provide an insight for the future leaders in various aspects of the business but also will enhance their confidence levels as they solve these critical problems for the organization. In many cases, senior managers seem unwilling to risk instability in their units by moving qualified people from jobs where the lower level manager is being successfu l and reflecting positively on the actions of the senior manager. It is however important to note that Job rotation at this level is less frequent as workers who fall under this category are already at the strategic stages and peak of their career. Job rotation at junior and middle level executives may be pivoted around their strengths and attributes and the future roles expected of them. Focus must be on exposure in all related areas of his domain of expertise, so that as they grow to higher rungs of the management, they have an overall experience of their domain. For this level, job rotation has normally one of two purposes: Promotability or Skill Enhancement although at Middle Management, Succession planning also becomes one of the purposes of job rotation. Job rotations for workers must include aspects related to work environment, also along with other individual attributes already explained, so that it adds to his satisfaction derived from balanced distribution of work load, work ing conditions and learning opportunities.Done this way job rotation gets aligned with career development, leadership development and employee satisfaction which would finally result in higher levels of intrinsic motivation among the employees and hence may contribute in retaining talent. WHY IS JOB ROTATION IMPORTANT? Job Rotation is seen as a possible solution to two significant challenges faced by business: (1) Skills shortages [when there is a lack of skilled individuals in the workforce] and Skills gaps [when there is a lack of skills in a company’s existing workforce which may still be found in the labour force as a whole]. (2) Employee motivation

The Corporation Joel Bakan Presents Arguments - 872 Words

In the book, The Corporation Joel Bakan presents arguments, that corporations are nothing but institutional pathological psychopaths that are â€Å"a dangerous possessor of the great power it wields over people and societies.† Their main responsibility is maximizing profit for their stockholders and ignoring the means to achieve this goal, portrays them as â€Å"psychopathic.† Bakan argues that, corporations are psychopaths, corporate social responsibility is illegal, and that corporations are able to manipulate anyone, even the government. A corporation is an artificial person established by the law. It nurses the same rights as humans contrariwise; they are not equally responsible for their actions. A corporation cannot face the same charges a human would: if illegal actions took place. Bakan illustrates the traits of a corporation to closely resemble the traits of a psychopathic individual human being. These traits are, but not limited to: â€Å"1) unconcern for others, 2) incapable of maintaining relationships, 3) disregard for others safety/health, 4) repeated lying, 5) incapable of experiencing guilt, and 6) failure to conform to social norms.† Therefore, executive’s means for earning high returns for shareholders can be seen as a trait of a psychopath. Though traces of modern-day CSR can be found in the social auditing movement of the 1970s, it has only recently acquired enough momentum to meritRead MoreOrganisational Theory230255 Words   |  922 PagesWhilst their writing is accessible and engaging, their approach is scholarly and serious. Commentary on ‘Foo Fighters Music Review’ and ‘The Birth of a Band, Waring Green’ Free Essays

My aim in writing these pieces were both to inform and put across my opinions to an audience of interested readers. For the music review my intended audience was young music lovers and for the biography it was more for anyone who is interested in reading about people who have had an interesting life experience, perhaps a similar one to themselves. I wanted my pieces to be clear and amusing, and in the music review, more informal so that it would appeal to people. We will write a custom essay sample on Commentary on ‘Foo Fighters Music Review’ and ‘The Birth of a Band, Waring Green’ or any similar topic only for you Order Now The biography was intended to be informative, whereas the review was intended to be more open in view as to include the audience more. In order to accomplish this I have deliberately used a number of techniques. In the title of my second production piece I have included some alliteration of the sound [ ] which catches the attention of the reader and helps to establish the main story. In ‘The Birth of a Band’ I used mainly first person pronouns such as ‘my’ and ‘I’. This helps to show the reader that it is from my own personal view and it is an actual real life even that I have encountered. In the Foo Fighter review I used mainly third person pronouns such as ‘their’, and I also named people and attached the event directly to their name. this is the opposite of the other piece as it establishes that the music and the credit belongs to them and no-one else. I have tried to be quite informal in both of my pieces by using words such as ‘dodgy’ and constructions such as ‘Pointless? Funny!’ This helps to make the reader feel more at ease when reading it, and there is also some intended humour in order to make the reader laugh, more so in the review than the biography piece. In the review of the Foo Fighters I included one instance of a mild taboo lexeme. ‘†¦damn good†¦Ã¢â‚¬â„¢ Again this is a point in the text that gives the reader a bit of comic relief and a chance to reflect on my opinions with their own. This is why I decided to add quite a lot of interrogatives into the text, even though I cannot expect an answer, the reader can establish their own views and opinions about what I think and also about what they think in comparison. I aimed to make my two pieces as clear as I possibly could. I used a number of techniques to ensure this. Firstly I used short strings of words, for example, ‘That was a real boost’, and tried to avoid overly long sentences. I didn’t want my readers to become bored of reading too many facts or opinions at a time. Secondly I used fairly short simple lexemes. I tried to keep my words either monosyllabic or disyllabic because this makes the text flow more smoothly and doesn’t make the reader get confused at long complicated words. In my two pieces I have used a lot of past tense, mainly in ‘The Birth of a Band’ to show how what we have achieved is a past event. For example ‘was’ and ‘asked’. However I did use some present progressive, ‘will keep trying’ in order to show how our band and music are still going. I also used some present tense, mainly in the Foo Fighters Music review, to show how their music is still in development. It also helps to convey how it is their most recent album, as I am talking about it in the ‘here and now’. I included in my review of the Foo Fighters music an overall grade of how I feel about their music. This is nine out of ten. Most people will understand this as a good mark because it is on a scale of one to ten which is the most common way of grading something. I feel it is a good way of rounding up my review, although I do think it could lead to the reader skipping the rest of the text and just taking the score at face value rather than investigating further into why I have given this grade. But if the reader is interested enough I do not see this as a major problem. I believe I have successfully achieved my targets in writing these pieces. I feel as though they are very entertaining and they convey my feelings and opinions towards the subject matter very effectively. I feel that the information I have provided is sound and believable. Initiation Of The Organizations Theories †MyAssignmenthelp.com

Question: Discuss about the Initiation Of The Organizations Theories. Answer: Introduction Initiation of the organizations theories is important for the contemporary business organizations due to the reason that, they have to operate in much competitive business scenario. Thus, in gaining the competitive advantages in the market and to stay ahead in the market, business organizations have to initiate the implementation of various organizational theories (Nonaka et al. 2014). However, there are different organizational theories, which are having different purpose for the different organizational situation and environment. One of the two most effective organizational theories being initiated by the contemporary business organizations are the strategic choice theory and determinist theory (Taylor 2012). These theories are being most used by the business organizations. This essay will discuss about the different dimensions of both these theories applicable for the business organizations. In addition, the effectiveness of these theories be compared in order to identify the most effective one. Strategic choice theory This theory refers to the choice of the most effective alternative from the choice of all available alternatives. The choice is being made by the business organizations on the basis of certain criterions (Judge et al. 2015). Thus, this helps the organizations to effectively identify the most effective option from all the available alternatives. According to Hill, Jones and Schilling (2014), initiation of the strategic choice theory will help the business organizations to making the most effective choice from all the available options. Moreover they have also stated that, initiation of the strategic choice theory is more beneficial and helpful for the contemporary business organizations due to the reason that, contemporary business organizations have to consider various diversified aspects to stay ahead in the competition. Thus, it is important for the business organizations to select the most effective option for their business operation. For instance, there are various market entry strategies being available for the business organizations in operating in the global business environment. In this case, initiation of the strategic choice theory will be helpful for the business organizations to select the most effective one. Volkswagen is one of the most prominent and leading carmakers in the world. However, they follow different market entry strategies in different countries. In some countries, they have followed the route of direct investment and in some other countries; they have followed the route of import. However, by having these diversified entry mode strategies, Volkswagen is gaining competitive advantages in the market. This is due to the initiation of the strategic choice theory by them (Grunig and Morschett 2012). It helped them to identify the most effective strategy for a particular market. Steps in strategic choice theory As discussed earlier, strategic choice theory involved some steps that should be followed by the business organizations to identify the most effective option. According to Eden and Ackermann (2013), there are three steps being involved in the initiation of the strategic choice theory. According to them, the first step is to identify the viable alternatives for the particular issue or requirement. This step involves matching the requirement of the organization with that of the aspects of the alternatives. The next step involves the evaluation of the chosen alternatives. In this step, all the chosen alternatives are being evaluated in order to identify the most effective one. The last step in this theory involves the identification of the most effective option and implementing it in the business organization (Trinh and Koh 2012). Institutional theory This theory is being stated by Meyer and Rowan regarding the benefits of following the formal structure in the organizations. As stated by Hatch and Zilber (2012), initiation of formal structure and standards in the internal management of the organization will help them to gain competitiveness in the market. According to them, maintaining the formal structure in the organizations help to have effective leadership role. This is due to the reason that, the more formal structure will be followed in the organization, the more effective will be the organizational structure. Thus, the communication among the internal stakeholders will be more effective. On the other hand, implementation of the change management will also be effective due to having formal structure in the organization. Resource dependency theory Contemporary business organizations depend on various source and types of resources to effectively operate in the market. These resources include natural resources to human resources. Thus, every organization is being depended on the different types of resources. The more access they will have to the strategic resources, the more competitiveness they will gain in the market. According to Wry, Cobb and Aldrich (2013), the dependency on the resources by the organizations changed over time. In the current business scenario, organizations are having the requirement of more diversified resources. Accordingly, this theory states that, the allocation of the available resources for the different departments along with the access to the strategic resources will determine the competitiveness of the organizations. For instance, TechnologyOne is a software organization in Australia. They are hugely depended on their human resources. Thus, the more skill and expertise their human resources will possess, the more competitive advantages they will gain in the market. Thus, according to resource dependency theory, they should manage the maintenance and supply of the skilled human resources effectively in order to enhance their effectiveness. Population ecology theory Population ecology theory states the competition in a particular business sector along with determining the various aspects such as the similarity of the products being offered by the organizations and number of similar firms operating in the same field (Vandermeer and Goldberg 2013). As discussed earlier, the contemporary business state of affairs is much more competitive than it was a decade ago. More number of organizations is operating in the similar sectors and thus the level of competition among the organizations is high. In this case, it is important for the business organizations to effectively determine the competitiveness in the market. Accordingly, they have to initiate business level strategies to stay ahead in the competition. Thus, the more effective will be the determination and initiation of the theory of population ecology, the more effective will be the organizational strategy in the market. Comparison among the theories The above sections discussed about various organizational theories, which will have diversified benefits in different situation for the business organizations. However, among all the theories being discussed above, there are differences between the determinist theories and the strategic choice theory. One of the key differences is approach. Strategic choice theory is having holistic approach compared to the singular approach of the determinist theories. This is due to the reason that, according to the strategic theory, organizations have the options to choose from the all the available alternatives. This theory also not stated any particular business scenario. On the other hand, resource dependency theory states the importance of only the resources for the organization, institutional theory states the importance of having the formal structure in the organization and population ecology theory states the importance of determining the competition and the characteristics of the competito rs in the market. According to Roughgarden, May and Levin (2014), population ecology refers to the determination of the competition in the market but it do not states the importance of the determination of the appropriate strategies to counter the competition. However, on the other hand, according to the Yarger (2012), strategic choice theory states the importance of the choosing the most effective strategy from the available ones. Thus, strategic choice theory acts as the secondary theory of the population ecology theory. In addition, there are various limitations being identified for all the above discussed theories. One of the key limitations being identified on the determinist theories is the lack of proper strategies to overcome the identified issues. For instance, in the case of the institutional theory, the importance of determining the competition in the market is being stated. However, the strategies that should be initiated by the organization to overcome the threat of increased competition in the market have not been stated. However, on the other hand, in the case of strategic choice theory, it is being stated that various alternatives should be chosen and the most effective one should be selected. However, in the practical situation, different business organizations have different scenario or environment and thus, the effectiveness of the available alternatives will be different (Rowlinson, Hassard and Decker 2014). Thus, from the above comparison, it is being identified that, strategic choice theory will be the more effective that the determinist theory. This is due to the reason that, strategic choice theory is flexible enough for different organizational requirements. On the other hand, determinist theories talks about specific organizational criterion and is less flexible than the strategic choice theory. Thus, strategic choice theory will help the organizations to select the most effective option from all the alternatives. Conclusion Thus, it can be concluded that, all the above discussed organizational theories are having their own set of effectiveness and limitations for the diversified business scenario for the organizations. Strategic choice theory is being selected as the most effective among the discussed theories due to the reason that, it is being identified as the more flexible option compared to the determinist theories. The Heavy Bear Who Goes With Me Essays - Alcohol Abuse,

The Heavy Bear Who Goes With Me The Heavy Bear Who Goes With Me Alcohol, probably the oldest drug known, has been used since the earliest of societies for celebration, rituals, and other social situations. In the early 1920's, society viewed alcohol as more of a social problem. The 18th amendment was passed to outlaw the consumption, sale, or trade of alcohol. This action caused much more delinquency, as a result of gangsters, and other organized crimes against the government. Prohibition was abolished with the 21st amendment in 1933. The poem ?The Heavy Bear Who Goes With Me? was written only a few years after prohibition and reflects the true nature of alcoholism. Although alcoholism was still frowned upon in this era, Schwartz uses a bear to expose and reflect the true nature of alcoholism. In the last stanza, ?The secret life of belly and bone? shows that Schwartz feels that alcoholism is still unacceptable behavior. Schwartz uses physical, emotional, and psychological aspects of a bear to explain the nature of alcoholism. Schwartz gives the bear human characteristics that would be true of an alcoholic, ?Clumsy and lumbering here and there? and ?In love with candy, anger, and sleep.? Much like bears, people who are alcoholics, may experience a great deal of difficulty keeping his/her balance or controlling their emotions. Schwartz furthers this metaphor of an alcoholic by showing a physical dependence: ?Trembles and shows the darkness beneath.? Due to withdrawal, an alcoholic may wake up in the morning with tremors and distress that require a drink for relief. The bear is also eager to engulf his physical need as shown in the line, ?A manifold honey to smear on his face.? This strong need for alcohol outweighs what a person knows and understands about the effect on the body. Schwartz conveys to his readers that alcoholism is an inevitable burden. He tells us the bear is ?That inescapable animal walks with me / Moves where I move, distorting my gesture.? It is apparent that Schwartz feels that alcoholis m is a burden. Conflicts with culture may make it difficult for some people to develop their own stable attitudes and moderate patterns of drinking. An alcoholic may feel the drinking is a way to become more sociable or change their mood. The author shows that although the bear appears to be confident, he has many insecurities, ?The strutting show-off is terrified, dressed in his dress-suit.? Schwartz shows an unhealthy connection to drinking, ?A sweetness intimate as the waters clasp.? This line explains the emotional hold alcohol has over the bear. Using the word ?intimate,? he shares with the readers what a very personal issue this is for an alcoholic. When he describes the ?waters clasp,? the reader is able to understand what a strong grasp alcohol has over him. The bear ?Howls in his sleep because of the tightrope? to further explain the emotional pain associated with this illness. Along with physical and emotional duress, the psychology of an alcoholic is a deep, recurring issue. An alcoholic who has sustained from drinking is referred to as a ?recovering alcoholic,? not as a ?cured alcoholic.? The author is unable to freely admit this is a problem for him; he uses the bear as a scapegoat. Schwartz tells us the story of the bear on his back. He leads the readers to believe that if it weren't for the bear that everything would be okay. He states, ?With whom I would walk without him near.? If the author could do this and leave his unbearable problems, he feels it ?would bare my heart and make me clear.? An alcoholic must recognize that he or she is powerless over alcohol, and seek help from a higher power in regaining control of his or her life. Alcoholism is an extremely serious problem it both today as it was yesterday. The poem ?The Heavy Bear Who Goes With Me? was written to expose a serious problem in an era where there was little or no help for this serious illness. The disorder is marked by extreme or compulsive use of alcohol. This horrifying disease strikes millions of Americans, ?The scrimmage of appetite everywhere.? Schwartz complaints of the bear and describes it as

Leadership in Beowulf essays

Leadership in Beowulf essays A well-respected, honored leader is a person that everyone strives to be. It is a type of person that everyone can look up to, try to emulate, and look to in times of distress. Although everyone is different in their own respects, there are characteristics common to most great leaders that can be picked out. The story Beowulf told by Robert Nye contains many different rulers that people follow. Among the various characteristics these men share, a few great qualities shine through, these being generosity, loyalty, and bravery. The leaders Beowulf and Hrothgar portray these qualities multiple times throughout the story. Generosity to ones people and ones friends is a characteristic everyone wants in a leader. In the story, Beowulf defeats Grendel, an enemy of Hrothgar and his people. For this mighty deed performed, Hrothgar not only holds a party for several days in Beowulfs honor, he also rewards him greatly with many riches (45-46). Another example of a leaders generosity takes place when Beowulf arrives back to his homeland. He is carrying many riches from his battles against evil in Hrothgars land. He goes and talks to his king, whereupon he gives all of it to him and the queen, even a prized golden collar. Beowulf simply said that all he gained was gained as a retainer of his king, so it all belonged to him (82-83). This shows that Beowulf had no greed and did not desire any gold or riches. He was generous and gave all to his king. Loyalty is another quintessential quality in a leader. Knowing that your leader is loyal to your country or cause is necessary. Beowulf personifies this quality. After defeating Grendel, Grendels mother came after Hrothgar and his people. Beowulf went heedlessly after this new threat to help his friend. He and his company tracked Grendels mothers tracks until they reached her lair. Upon this discovery, Beowulf departed from his subordinates and went to face...
